Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates has suffered a serious knee injury and looks set to be out for at least six months.
The 22-year-old damaged his anterior cruciate ligament while on international duty for Uruguay playing against Japan in a friendly last week and he is now set to have an operation in South America on Friday.
Coates, who would have been used as cover for Daniel Agger, Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel at Anfield this season, made just 12 appearances in all competitions for the Reds last season and had does not appear to have any long-term future at the club.
He has been attracting interest from a number of clubs across Europe, including several in Italy, but this injury setback is likely to scupper any chance he had of securing a move away before the transfer window closes on September 2.
Coates was a highly-rated youngster when he arrived at Anfield under former boss Kenny Dalglish in 2011 but, despite limited action, he has failed to live up to expectations.
