Defender could miss rest of year

Liverpool have been rocked by the news defender Fabio Aurelio could be out for six months after he picked up a knee injury in Brazil.

Reports say the full-back injured his knee while playing football with his family back in his home country and he could be ruled out until the end of the year.

The news is a major blow to boss Rafa Benitez ahead of the new season as the injury-prone 29-year-old had finally established himself as first-choice left-back at Anfield last term.

Aurelio's injury means Andrea Dossena could now stay at the club and compete with Emiliano Insua for a first-team place, although the expected arrival of French youngster Chris Mavinga will also add to Benitez's options in the new campaign.
