Gerrard warns against Fulham complacency

Last Updated: Mon, 10 Feb 2014 09:35

Steven Gerrard says it is vital the Liverpool back up their fantastic win over Arsenal with a result against Fulham on Wednesday.

Gerrard was delighted with the 5-1 performance against the Gunners and rates it as one of the best during his long career, but he knows the Reds need to back it up on Wednesday at Craven Cottage.

Fulham are in desperate trouble at the foot of the table but got a morale-boosting point at Old Trafford on Sunday and will be looking to back up that result on Wednesday.

Gerrard said: "I think the dangerous thing after a performance like that is can we motivate ourselves to get close to producing something similar against Fulham?

"If we do, we will do the same to Fulham. We performed fantastically against Everton (4-0) and then slipped up against West Brom (1-1), having taken the lead. We should have seen that game out.

"The challenge now is can we get three points against Fulham?

"But we listen to what our leader says and he says we are not in the title race. So we go with that."

Gerrard said although the performance sent out a message to their top-four rivals the team had to back it up by consistently producing.

"You can set markers and you can have one-off games but it means nothing if you don't continue to play well and get something from it at the end of the season," added the England captain.

"We aren't going to look back at the end of the season and think 'How good were we against Arsenal?' if we never got the top four.

"We can enjoy this but we have got to move on quickly and try and get three points against Arsenal."
