Gerrard's shock England claim

NewsSteven Gerrard has accepted he could be a casualty of manager Fabio Capello's unsympathetic approach to England's 'big hitters'.

Gerrard enjoys iconic status at Liverpool but feels he has failed to translate his club form onto the international stage - and is worried he could be ousted by the no-nonsense Italian coach in preference for central midfield rival Frank Lampard.

Patriotic punters pondering a £10 free bet will note Capello does not care for reputations and on Saturday gave Gareth Barry the hook at half-time against Kazakhstan, while David Beckham has been reduced to a bit-part player and Michael Owen - fourth in the list of England's leading goalscorers of all time on 40 goals - cannot get a look in.

Gerrard, who should win his 70th cap in Wednesday's Group Six World Cup qualifying match against Belarus at the Dinamo Stadium in Minsk, said: "The manager has shown in the games he has been in charge he's prepared to make changes. He's not bothered about big names or big hitters, he'll pick the team who he thinks will do the job."

England head to Belarus on the back of three successive wins and will give their qualifying credentials a significant boost with maximum points against a nation ranked 59 in the world, although a repeat of the 5-1 scoreline against Kazakhstan may prove difficult.

Belarus' most celebrated player, Alexander Hleb, has not featured since Barcelona's draw against Racing Santander on September 13 because of an ankle injury and looks set to miss out.
