More sales for more signings - Rafa

LiverpoolRafa Benitez has made it clear he will offload some more of his squad so he can afford to buy more new players, namely Gareth Barry.

The Reds boss appears to have used up any available cash he had on buying Robbie Keane from Spurs in £20m-plus deal, but he would still like to add Barry to his midfield and appears prepared to sell players in order to do that.

Benitez said: "We knew that we could only spend money by selling players and we have been doing this.

"We are still trying to sign the players that we need, and if we need to sell someone now, okay, we will do so."

The Reds boss added: "If we can do it (the Barry deal) before the end of the transfer window, we will continue to try. We will always continue to improve our squad."

The players would could be sacrificed in order to bring in the money are Jermaine Pennant, Xabi Alonso, Andriy Voronin and Steve Finnan. Although the first pairing would generate more cash than the second two, Benitez remains determined to land Barry so any or all could be sold before the end of next month.
