Reds boosted on injury front

Last Updated: Fri, 18 Oct 2013 08:13

Brendan Rodgers will hand a late fitness test to England right-back Glen Johnson ahead of their clash with Newcastle on Saturday.

Johnson has been out of the side for six weeks after picking up an ankle injury against Manchester United but he is back in full training and could play at St James' Park.

The 29-year-old is not alone, as midfielder Joe Allen looks to have shaken off his hamstring problem and defender Aly Cissokho, who has not been involved since picking up an ankle injury in the win over Notts County in the Capital One Cup, is also pushing for a return.

Philippe Coutinho may have to wait for a further week but he is recovering from his shoulder injury that required surgery but defender Sebastian Coates remains a long-term absentee with a serious knee injury that will probably keep him out for the season.
