Liverpool are believed to have contacted Ajax regarding defender Toby Alderweireld but face stiff competition from Atletico Madrid.
The Belgium international has spent his entire career at the Amsterdam Arena but is expected to leave the club before Monday's transfer deadline.
Premier League side Norwich City are the only side to have agreed a fee with the Eredivisie outfit but Alderweireld turned down the switch to Carrow Road earlier this summer.
Everton and Zenit St Petersburg have also been linked with a move for the 24-year-old, though it is Primera Liga side Atletico who are believed to be leading the race for the defender.
However, reports from Belgium on Thursday suggest that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has also contacted Ajax about Alderweireld.
Liverpool are in the midst of a defensive injury crisis with Kolo Toure and Sebastian Coates sidelined and Martin Skrtel struggling for match fitness.
That has prompted Rodgers to re-enter the transfer market for a defender, though it has yet to be confirmed whether a firm bid has been lodged for the Ajax stopper.
