Liverpool fear defender Glen Johnson will be out of action for around 10 weeks, meaning Andre Wisdom will not be going out on loan.
Johnson suffered a knee injury in last weekend's 1-0 win over Manchester United and left Anfield on crutches amid concerns he had suffered a serious setback.
The Reds have been assessing him this week and there has yet to be an official announcement over the extent of the problem, but the fear is the right-back will be out until November.
His injury means youngster Wisdom will be needed as cover and therefore will not be allowed to leave on loan, despite interest from the likes of Wigan, Bolton and Blackburn.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers reinforced his defence during the summer transfer window with French defender Mamadou Sakho the major £15milion signing, while Tiago Ilori and Aly Cissokho also arrived although the latter is also out for at least a month with an injury sustained in the Capital One Cup win over Notts County last month.
