Reds injury relief

LiverpoolLiverpool say there is a good chance that Martin Skrtel could be back in action by Christmas after promising results from his scan.

The centre-back suffered cruciate ligament damage in Sunday's 3-2 win at Manchester City and the early prognosis didn't look good, with fears the Slovakian would be sidelined until into the new year.

But after having a scan on the knee on Tuesday, medical staff say Skrtel could play some part in Liverpool's hectic fixture schedule over the festive period. Liverpool will play three matches, against Arsenal, Bolton and Newcastle, in seven days from December 21 to 28.

Club spokesman Ian Cotton issued the injury update, saying: "Martin was examined by a specialist today, who confirmed the player does not require surgery and is expected to be back playing by Christmas."

Before the good news was announced, Rafa Benitez was keen to point out that although Skrtel's absence is a blow, there is plenty of defensive cover at Anfield.

The boss told the club's website: "To lose a player who is doing well is always a problem. It's bad news, but we have other options.

"He (Skrtel) has given me a selection headache this season, but that is a good problem for me as a manager."
