Skrtel thought career was over

LiverpoolLiverpool's Martin Skrtel has admitted that he thought the injury he suffered against Manchester City could have ended his career.

The Slovakian international suffered damage to his posterior cruciate ligament during the Reds' victory at Eastlands on Sunday.

Liverpool came from two goals down to win the match 3-2 in a game already being billed as one of the Premiership's greatest ever, but the scoreline was marred by a serious injury to the centre-half.

Skrtel fell awkwardly on his right leg as he chased a long ball and will now be ruled out until Christmas, but the 23-year-old is aware it could have been far worse.

He told the Daily Mirror: "I thought my career was over. The pain was unbearable. I can't remember a lot about the moment, but it was terrible. I thought that was the end for me.

"I have never suffered anything like that before but I remained conscious and they gave me oxygen to help with the pain.

"I almost ripped the ligament fully and, had I done that, I would have been out for eight months.

"But now it will be more like eight weeks if I'm lucky, when I should be able to start training again."
