This time though, Torres is likely to gain a head start on some of his major rivals, with the likes of Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Didier Drogba set to miss the start of the season due to injury, and fans will factor this in when considering their £25 free bet on who will top the scoring charts this season.
Doubters though may point to three factors as to why Torres may not be as successful this time around. Firstly, the 24-year-old hasn't had much of a break since Euro 2008, and then there is a new partnership with Robbie Keane to work on. The other concern for Reds fans is the second season syndrome, which has affected other Premier League stars in the past after an impressive debut campaign.
Torres himself though expects big things again and has set himself a stern target for 2008-09, as he looks to help the Reds mount a title challenge.
The striker said: "We have another chance to leave a mark with the Premier League and the Champions League. I am coming into this season with all the desire and hope in the world.
"My aim is to score more than last season, that is what I am working towards. I, at least, have to aim to equal last year's figure because it is very important to bring goals to the team."
