Dave Whelan has suggested Wigan will cash in on Anfield target Emile Heskey next month rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.

Heskey is out of contract at the end of the season when he will assess his options, with Whelan braced for the former Liverpool star's departure.

The 30-year-old looks set to try his luck at a big club once again and Aston Villa, Tottenham and Rafa Benitez's Reds have all been linked.

And Latics owner Whelan concedes he may be forced to sell Heskey rather than allow his deal to wind down.

"Emile is out of contract in the summer, but he doesn't want to sign a new one at the moment," said Whelan.

"It could cost us two, three or four million if that goes on to next summer, so we'll have to see what January brings."
