Atletico Madrid are holding Manchester City to ransom over their attempts to sign Argentina centre back Martin Demichelis.
City want Atletico to reduce their 5million euros asking price for a player they signed on a free transfer from Malaga earlier this summer.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini worked with Demichelis, 32, when both were at Malaga and has made him his top target after Real Madrid refused to sell Pepe.
City director of football Txiki Begiristain is in Madrid to conclude the deal, but Atletico hold all the cards as they know the Blues are desperate to sign an experienced central defender in the wake of Vincent Kompany's injury.
Demichelis has told Atletico that he wants to go, and Atletico are already sounding out possible replacements with Ajax's Toby Alderweireld appearing to be their number one target.
