City keen on Pepe swoop

Manchester City are being tipped to make a £25m move for Real Madrid star Pepe as Manuel Pellegrini looks to improve his defence.

City have targeted the Portuguese centre-back to team-up with skipper Vincent Kompany after cooling their interest in Eliaquim Mangala, who appears to have his heart set on a switch to Manchester United.

Talks have been on-going for some time between the reigning Premier League champions and Mangala's club Porto, but City officials are ready to turn their attentions elsewhere for Joleon Lescott's replacement if a decision isn't reached soon.

Pepe has just enjoyed an outstanding season with Real after helping them to a Champions League and Copa del Rey double, and his big-game experience would certainly fit the bill for a club with City's ambitions.

The Spanish giants are prepared to listen to offer though for the 31-year-old due to the continuing development of Raphael Varane alongside Sergio Ramos.

Pepe would also cost half the price of the £45m Porto are holding out for to tempt them into part company with Mangala.
