Manchester City are reported to have failed with a bid to land Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala and will make a new attempt in January.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini tried to land the highly-rated 22-year-old just before the transfer window closed but was told no deal as Porto did not have enough time to sign a replacement.
However City could revisit the deal in January and have now given Porto enough time to find the central defender's successor. City will face strong competition for the player's signature though as Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United along with Barcelona, are also said to be interested in the player.
Pellegrini will be regretting not getting the deal done earlier following the news that new signing Martin Demichelis has been ruled out for six weeks through injury.
