City scout in Lisbon dash

Manchester City scout Rob Newman watched Porto duo Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando play in Sunday's league defeat to Sporting Club.

City's top European spy had earlier run the Lisbon 10 kilometre race with former Norwich City team-mate Tony Spearing, the head of European recruitment at West Bromwich Albion.

City remain favourites to sign the Porto pair in the summer with Mangala thought to be the perfect compliment to skipper Vincent Kompany for the next few years.

The French international has also been watched by Manchester United for a couple of years with Old Trafford boss David Moyes in Paris to see him play against Holland earlier this month.

But City, who were linked with a double deal for Mangala and Fernando in January, remain keen although they will have to pay dearly for a double deal after Brazilian midfielder Fernando renewed his contract with the club in February, shortly after receiving an EU passport.
