Manchester City have been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid defender Martin Demichelis after giving up on Real Madrid's Pepe.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini is keen to bring in another centre-half before the transfer window closes and had been tipped to raid Real for Portugal international Pepe.
Real are reluctant to sell Pepe, despite the fact he fell out of favour last season, and reportedly value the defender at around £20million.
Pellegrini is now ready to turn his attentions elsewhere and has been linked with Liverpool's Daniel Agger but the latest reports suggest former Bayern Munich man Demichellis is a target.
The 32-year-old only joined Atletico from Pellegrini's former side Malaga on a free transfer this summer, but is thought to be open to a reunion with Pellegrini.
It has been suggested that Atletico could agree to cancel Demichelis' contract, while other sources have claimed a fee of around £3million will be enough to convince the Madrid side to sell.
