AC Milan coach Leonardo has told Manchester City to forget about signing Gennaro Gattuso as the player does not want to leave.
City boss Mark Hughes was heavily linked with a swoop for the 31-year-old Italy international, who has been restricted to just seven league appearances this term due to a muscular injury. However, despite claims in the Italian media that Gattuso is contemplating a move away from the San Siro in January, Leonardo insists that is not the case.
"I have spoken to (AC Milan club administrator Adriano) Galliani," said Leonardo. "I often speak to Gattuso and it's not true.
"There is no truth in claims that he wants to leave."
He added: "Gattuso's priority is to recover. He is out injured and it's normal that a player who is recovering from injury is eager to come back to play. Milan's project is to use all the players we have available."
Brazilian star Ronaldinho also feels Gattuso will stay put and at least see out the rest of his current contract which expires in summer 2011.
"Rino (Gattuso) is a good friend of mine," he said. "He is the soul of this team and I expect him to remain here."
