Manchester City failed with an offer to Mario Gotze last month that would have seen him become the best-paid footballer in the world.
German newspaper Bild are claiming that City offered the German international a deal worth 20 million euros a season, effectively £330,00-a-week, but he opted to join Bayern Munich instead.
The staggering wage package said to be on offer at the Etihad Stadium would have dwarfed the salaries of City's current top earner Yaya Toure and made the agents of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo sit up and take notice.
Messi and Ronaldo are variously said to earn between 13 and 13.5million euros a season, although they pay slightly less tax than British footballers in Spain.
The world's highest-paid footballer is currently believed to be Samuel Eto'o who was handed a deal worth £325,000-a-week when he left Inter Milan to join Anzhi Makhachkala.
