Napoli join City stopper race

Napoli have joined the race to sign Manchester City's want away full-back Micah Richards, according to reports in Italy.

The Italian Serie A outfit are managed by former Liverpool and Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez, who has good knowledge of Richards from his time in the Premier League and it appears he has been alerted by the player's desire to leave the Etihad Stadium.

Richards has barely featured this season under Manuel Pellegrini's leadership and it was recently reported that he will look to leave in the summer in a bid to secure regular action elsewhere.

City would no doubt be keen to offload him given that he will be entering the final year of his City contract after the summer and could leave for nothing in 2015.

A clutch of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Newcastle and West Ham have all been linked, but Tuttosport is claiming that Benitez wants to sign him to bolster Napoli's defence.

City would want around £9million for Richards' signature while the player could be tempted by Napoli given that they would be able to offer Champions League football next season as they sit in third place - 10 points clear of Fiorentina in fourth.
