Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is considering a move for Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero in the January transfer window.
First-choice goalkeeper Joe Hart has been the subject of some criticism during the early stages of the campaign after some less than convincing performances.
Pellegrini insists that he would like more competition for the number one shirt in order to push Hart to his full potential.
The Chilean has made no secret of his admiration for Caballero, who he signed during his time in charge of Malaga.
Caballero joined the Andalusian club in 2011 from Elche and established himself as one of the top stoppers in La Liga, helping the side to the quarter-finals of the Champions League last term.
The 60-year-old Pellegrini is also believed to be monitoring out-of-favour Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas who has struggled to win back the number one jersey under Carlo Ancelotti, having lost it to Diego Lopez under Jose Mourinho.
