Real Madrid are the favourites to sign Edinson Cavani after Napoli claimed Manchester City will not meet the £53.6million asking price.
City have been heavily linked with a swoop for the highly-rated Uruguay international, who scored 38 goals for the Italian Serie A outfit last season.
Chelsea have also been mooted as an interested party, while Spanish giants Real Madrid were the third team in the loop for his services.
However, as Chelsea have yet to make contact and look to be out of the running, it seemed like it was turning into a two-horse race between City and Real Madrid.
But Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has claimed that City are not prepared to meet their valuation of the 26-year-old, while Real are the only club to have made an acceptable offer.
De Laurentiis said: "Manchester City have not the money to pay for Cavani. The Abu Dhabi (owners) have said they will never spend 63million euros for Cavani. They say, 'We can give other things', but they are not in the interest of our club."
He added: "At this time, Real Madrid are the only club who have made a firm offer for Cavani. It is human, if Real Madrid call, to answer. He knows he has a clause and must decide."
