Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea both look set to battle it out with Manchester City for Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin.
City have been tracking the Uruguay international since the summer and are still thought to be monitoring his progress in the Spanish capital, despite signing Martin Demichelis in August.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini is keen to add further defensive reinforcements in January as he prepares for Joleon Lescott's expected departure from the Etihad Stadium.
Atletico are keen for Godin to stay at the Vicente Calderon but he is currently stalling on talks over extending his current contract, which expires in 2015.
The 27-year-old is thought to be on the lookout for a new challenge and has reportedly welcomed interest from City.
However, Dortmund and Chelsea have now entered the race for his signature, sending scouts to watch the defender in action this season.
German outfit Dortmund are ready to move for Godin as early as January and City must now make up their minds whether to make an offer when the transfer window opens.
