Shakhtar Donetsk are the new favourites to sign Manchester City and AC Milan target Vlad Chiriches from Steaua Bucharest.
The Ukrainian giants have expressed an interest in the £13.5million-rated centre back through their Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu.
Shakhtar are on the lookout for a new defender amid rumours that they will sell their Ukrainian international Dmitro Chygrinskiy this summer and Lucescu, who has just extended his own contract with the club until 2015, is keen.
Manchester City, Chelsea, AC Milan, Inter, Real Madrid and Al Ain have all been linked to Chiriches, 23, who has had a fine season, catching the eye with his fine displays in the Europa League.
Steaua's asking price is steep and City's earlier interest appears to have waned since it became public knowledge that the club and Chiriches' agents, the Becali brothers, would hold out for a huge fee and personal terms.
Steaua general manager Mihai Stoica said: "If Shakhtar paid 15 million euros and Chiriches wants to go there, it can be done."
