Shirt sales helped Brazilian deal

Man CityRobinho rejected a move to Chelsea because Real Madrid took offence at his name on the back of their shirts before a deal was struck.

The Brazilian - signed on deadline day by Premier League rivals Manchester City with the help of mega-rich new owners Abu Dhabi United Group - was tracked by Chelsea all summer.

Robinho even called a press conference to openly express his desire to move to Stamford Bridge. However, the Spanish champions were unhappy with Chelsea's conduct in chasing the 24-year-old and pulled the plug on negotiations.

"My first goal was to go to Chelsea as it was the only club to have made a formal offer," said Robinho. "But Real did not like Chelsea shirts with my name on being sold before sorting out the negotiations.

"Also, they did not reach the value Real demanded so then Manchester City came in at the last minute to sign me."
