Carrick up for huge Reds clash

Manchester United's Michael Carrick feels form and league positions will count for nothing in next weekend's clash with Liverpool.

The Merseysiders will travel to Old Trafford in the unusual position of being above the Red Devils in the Premier League table as they currently sit in second place, with 59 points from 28 games played.

United are 11 points behind their north-west rivals having played the same number of games and the limit of their ambitions this season is a top-four finish.

However, that would seem a tall order given that the clubs currently occupying the Champions League qualification spots are all in decent form and have a huge points advantage over David Moyes' men with just 10 top-flight games to go.

Therefore victory over Liverpool is even more vital for the champions and Carrick believes that events that have occurred so far this term will all go out of the window when battle lines are drawn on Sunday.

"It's a big month ahead, we're well aware of that," he told "It's Liverpool next and that's a big one. Regardless of where both teams are in the league it's an important fixture.

"In recent times, with this rivalry, we've been on top of them in the league and it's the other way around at the moment. But I don't think league places affect the game.

"We'd say it if we're top of the table that form goes out of the window against Liverpool, it counts for very little, and that's the case now."
