Dramatic Ronaldo deveopments

NewsInformed opinion suggests it is almost certain Cristiano Ronaldo will be staying at Old Trafford, a view now supported by Real Madrid.

Ronaldo fans can still cash in with a £25 free bet after Real president Ramon Calderon finally admitted it was highly unlikely that United's top scorer would play at the Bernabeu next season.

The Spanish champions have led a summer-long chase to prise the Portugal international away from Old Trafford and comments by the player that he wanted to move to the Bernabeu prompted a flurry of activity in the market.

Sir Alex Ferguson does not tolerate dissention and will not have been pleased to read the quotes alleged to be from the Portuguese star. What his relationship will now be with Ronaldo is open to conjecture.

However, with Chelsea's recruitment drive gathering pace as they look to end United's dominance both domestically and in the Champions League, the Red Devils were desperate to hold onto their prized asset and Calderon will meet United chief executive David Gill on Monday when the long-running saga is expected to be put to bed for good.

"He must love Manchester," Calderon told Marca. "Once Manchester decide they want to sell and they tell us this, then we will say that we're talking about a transfer.

"But today that's not happening and therefore this is a situation that may end up as it is now, as nothing, and Cristiano Ronaldo will continue at Manchester next year.

"At the moment, that's the most likely scenario. They don't want to sell so we can't do anything."

Whether or not the Portugal international star is available for United's opening Premiership fixtures is open to debate as he recovers from ankle surgery, with his absence set to influence the positions at the top of the table after the first month of the season.
