Monaco are on red alert for Patrice Evra after United were told to increase their bid for Everton left-back Leighton Baines to £16m.
The newly-promoted Ligue 1 club, who were on Thursday docked two points by the French league for crowd disturbances last season, look the most likely destination for Evra if United complete the signing of Baines.
Paris St Germain had shown interest in the 32-year-old, who is entering the last year of his Old Trafford contract, but their appointment of Laurent Blanc as coach this week casts doubt on any move back to the French capital club - who released him when he was 17.
Evra was in international exile for Blanc's two-year spell in charge of the French national team after being stripped of the captaincy and banned for leading a squad mutiny at the 2010 World Cup and the pair are not believed to be on the best terms.
Monaco, where Evra spent five seasons before joining United, are believed to be interested but there have been few rumours coming out of France in the last few weeks.
David Moyes has targeted Baines after two superb seasons under him at Everton where he has been consistently the best left-back in the Premier League.
United's initial bid of between £10-12million matches the offer that Moyes turned down when he was in charge at Goodison Park last summer.
Although Everton have stated the England star is 'not for sale', it is believed that they have a price in mind and that £16million would be enough to change their stance.
