Sir Alex Ferguson will not rush the appointment of a new assistant after Carlos Queiroz swapped Manchester United for Portugal.

Former Real Madrid coach Queiroz's second spell at Old Trafford came to an end this week after he was named as Luiz Felipe Scolari's successor.

And Fergie has vowed to take his time as he decides on his next right-hand man after Queiroz left the club in the wake of last season's Premier League and Champions League double.

"We'll just take our time as we normally do, we'll wait and see how things unfold," said Ferguson.

The Scot added: "It's disappointing but he [Queiroz] did a great job for us and that's why he'll be remembered. He's gone with our best wishes.

"A lot of the innovations we've had over the last few years are down to Carlos."

United are unlikely to have a new man on board prior to the trip to South Africa later this month unless Fergie makes an unexpected quick-fire decision.
