Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes right-back Rafael is starting to prove his worth at Old Trafford.

Rafael arrived at United as an 18-year-old in 2008, with twin brother Fabio also making the switch at the same time.

The right-back has firmly established himself as a first-team regular with United this term, while Fabio has joined QPR on loan for the season.

Ferguson has been delighted with Rafael's performances to date during the campaign and feels the Brazilian has cut out the mistakes he was making earlier in his United career.

"Rafael came into the team at 18 and made a lot of mistakes," said Ferguson. "He was very rash. But we invested in him for our future and he is showing that maturity now."

Fellow defender Jonny Evans has also been delighted with Rafael's form over the course of the season so far and has hailed the 22-year-old as one of the world's best right-backs.

"He really sets the tone and is a credit to himself. Everyone probably thought it would be a bit tough for him with his brother going away but he has got his head down and worked really hard," said Evans.

"He is one of the best right-backs in the world."
