Manchester United are reportedly set to miss out on signing Barcelona's Thiago Alcantara with Bayern Munich trying to hijack the deal.
The Red Devils have now embarked on their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia and they were welcomed by large crowds at Bangkok Airport in Thailand overnight ahead of Saturday's friendly against Singha All Stars.
However, work is still being done to try and bolster the squad ahead of United's title defence next season as boss David Moyes is looking to replace the retired Paul Scholes, while the respective futures of fellow midfielders Darren Fletcher and Anderson at Old Trafford remain uncertain.
It was thought 22-year-old Spain international Alcantara would come in to fill some of the midfield void as he wanted a move to United to help boost his chances of playing for his country at next summer's World Cup finals in Brazil.
However, Spanish daily Marca is now claiming his former Nou Camp boss Guardiola, who has taken over at German treble winners Bayern Munich this summer, has made a successful last-ditch attempt to lure Alcantara to the Bundesliga instead.
The news will come as a real blow to Moyes who will have to go back to the drawing board to find an alternative, with the new season just over a month away.
