Carlos Queiroz has hinted he is not planning on becoming the new Portugal coach and expects to be with United for pre-season.

The Old Trafford number two's future has been the centre of speculation since Luiz Felipe Scolari was announced as the next Chelsea manager.

The Portuguese football federation are thought to have made Queiroz their firm favourite for a post which he previously held over ten years ago.

Sir Alex Ferguson has put forward the case for his assistant to take over from him when he retires from football in two to three years time - and Queiroz may be tempted to hang on until the bigger job comes up.

"I've been in the game too long to plan with any certainty beyond today," he said.

"But in all likelihood I will be in South Africa next month with United for their pre-season tour."
