Manchester United are monitoring St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma and Freiburg's German Under-19 midfielder Matthias Ginter.
A United scout saw Zouma, 18, score with a header against Lyon on Sunday as speculation grows that Paris-Saint Germain are lining up a summer bid for the Frenchman.
PSG appear to be the new favourites in the chase for Zouma's signature and see him as an ideal partner for Thiago Silva in their back four as they bid to dominate Europe.
United have been tracking Zouma since he played in the Under-17 World Cup in Mexico two years ago.
Meanwhile, Sir Alex Ferguson's scouts are also taking a keen interest in Ginter, 19, who played in Freiburg's 1-0 defeat to a second string Bayern Munich side on Saturday - his 19th Bundesliga start of the season.
Newspaper Badische Zeitung reported at the weekend that scouts from Liverpool and Manchester United have been spotted at Freiburg games this season but there have also been claims that Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal are interested.
The 6ft 2in holding midfielder has the look of a young Michael Carrick about him on the field and could turn out to be a ready-made replacement for the 30-year-old England midfielder one day if he continues his development.
Freiburg are understood to have obtained Ginter's commitment to stay for one more season, which could be good news for United as Borussia Dortmund were hoping to tempt him away with a £6.5million bid this summer.
