Manchester United assistant boss Mike Phelan watched Wilfried Zaha on Saturday while another scout watched FC Porto against Benfica.

Sir Alex Ferguson's right-hand man made the short journey from his Lancashire home to Turf Moor to see Zaha's Crystal Palace side relinquish third spot in the Championship after a 1-0 defeat to Burnley.

The 20-year-old England international was not at his best but rumours continue to surround Zaha's future with Arsenal and United apparently vying for his signature, despite the fact that Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out any major signings and Palace boss Ian Holloway is desperate to hold onto him.

United's Portuguese scout Toninho Cruz was in his usual seat at the Stadium of Light last night to see the country's top two clubs play out a 2-2 draw.

Colombian forward James Rodriguez, who has been linked to Old Trafford for over a year, did not play because of injury but highly-rated Brazilian left-back Alex Sandro did start for Porto.

Former Reds target Nicolas Gaitan scored for Benfica while Argentinean centre back Ezequiel Garay, who has recently been linked to United, also started.

Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, PSV, Celtic, Real Zaragoza, Sevilla, Real Betis, Middlesbrough, Borussia Moenchengladbach, Montpellier, Cologne, and West Brom were also represented at the match.
