Manchester United are reportedly planning a fresh bid for Ander Herrera after seeing their first offer rejected by Athletic Bilbao.
United boss David Moyes is desperate to add new faces to his squad before Monday's transfer deadline and has made improving the team's midfield a priority.
The reigning Premier League champions have already failed with offers for Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas and Marouane Fellaini of Everton this summer, and time is running out for Moyes to make additions.
Athletic confirmed yesterday that they had knocked back United's opening bid of £21m for Herrera as it fell short of their valuation of the player.
However, United would be free to talk to the midfielder if they increase their offer to meet his £31m release clause and that now appears likely as the 11pm cut point on Monday draws ever closer.
An alternative option for the former Everton manager could be AS Roma star Daniele de Rossi, although the Italian club are confident he will stay despite talk of a £10m switch to Old Trafford.
