United set to make wonderkid bid

Manchester United are set to test Dundee United's resolve with a cheeky £2million bid for Scottish wonderkid Ryan Gauld.

The Dundee Evening Telegraph claim United boss David Moyes is ready to sanction the offer after taking over the scouting dossier on the 17-year-old midfielder, who is also being tracked by Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Madrid.

Gauld signed a new deal at Tannadice earlier this season just as the scouts began to circle and it is likely to take more than £2million to prise him away from the club he is tied to until 2016.

But United's move could spark a bidding war with the Gunners who are sending a scout to Tayside this weekend to watch Gauld in action against Kilmarnock on Friday night and another talented youngster perform for Dundee on Saturday.

Gauld, born in Aberdeen and raised in Laurencekirk, has scored five goals from 15 games this season and provided multiple assists.

He shrugs off the comparisons with Lionel Messi that have seen him dubbed 'mini-Messi' by his teammates and the press, but does harbour ambitions to play at a higher level.

"I would like to think that I could go abroad maybe and see the lifestyle and culture over there," he told the BBC.

"Obviously, every young boy's dream is the Champions League. That's the biggest stage of football so if I could reach that at some point in my career I would be absolutely delighted."
