Manchester United look set to miss out on Roma winger Erik Lamela who is poised to sign a new contract at the Stadio Olimpico.
Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson sent his brother and scout Martin to Italy ten days ago where it was reported that he was checking on Roma's 21-year-old, £25million-rated Argentina international during his side's 2-1 win at Torino.
Rivals Manchester City are also thought to be interested in Lamela, who has thrived in an attacking role in Rome this season to become the club's 17-goal top scorer at present.
However, it now looks like United's attempts to lure the player to Old Trafford, possibly as a replacement for Nani, will end in failure.
Reports coming out of Italy are claiming that former River Plate starlet Lamela will sign a new, improved five-year contract extension which will see him stay at Roma until summer 2018 and see his wages rise from £35,000-a-week to £50,000-a-week.
