Manchester United will reportedly have to fork out nearly £40m if they want to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.
United boss Louis Van Gaal continues to work on transfer targets while in charge of the Netherlands at the World Cup and he is expected to bring in plenty of new faces before the new campaign kicks off.
The Red Devils have held preliminary talks with the Portuguese side over the 22-year-old, who has also been interesting Chelsea, but have been told they must meet his £37m release clause to trigger a deal.
Carvalho has emerged as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe and could form a new partnership with Ander Herrera at Old Trafford next season following his arrival from Athletic Bilbao.
If the deal does go through, it could signal the end of Marouane Fellaini's brief United career. Further reports suggest Van Gaal has already sanctioned the Belgian's exit and the club are willing to listen to offers in the region of £10m for a player who cost former boss David Moyes more than double that amount just 12 months ago.
