Whelan confirms United interest

Man UtdWigan chairman Dave Whelan has told Manchester United he will fight to keep hold of star winger Antonio Valencia.

Reports had suggested Old Trafford manager Sir Alex Ferguson is weighing up a January move for Valencia and his highly-rated JJB team-mate Wilson Palacios.

However, Latics supremo Whelan, while accepting interest from the Premier League champions, has insisted he will do all he can to keep hold of the club's star assets.

"We've got some fantastic young players here and we're going to get some clubs chasing them," he told the Wigan Evening Post.

"That's football. If you're a professional footballer you want to win things, I understand that. We will keep them as long as we can.

"We have a good team and a great spirit. Steve Bruce has instilled belief. The goal from Valencia against Man City was stunning, I know Man United have been watching him."
