Arsenal strengthen their hold on third by putting three past a lacklustre Aston Villa outfit in a dominant display at the Emirates.

Arsenal came out of the blocks quickly and they did not have to wait long for their first goal, Kieran Gibbs finding space in the area before slotting the ball past Shay Given on 16 minutes.

The Gunners pressed for a second and they were rewarded on 25 minutes when Alex Song found Theo Walcott, who brought the ball down superbly before passing it into the back of the net.

Arsenal could have had three before the break when Robin Van Persie beat Given, only for Stephen Warnock to head the ball off the goal line and over the bar.

With game all but over at the break, the Gunners continued to dominate proceedings at the Emirates in the second-half, with Wojciech Szczesny never really tested.

The home side put the icing on the cake in injury time when Mikel Arteta stepped up from 30 yards out to fire home a superbly struck free-kick, as Arsenal made it seven wins on the bounce in the Premier League.
