An own goal from Scott Dann and an injury time finish from Gabriel Obertan was enough to give Newcastle all three points on Wednesday.

It was a scrappy start to the game at Ewood Park but Newcastle United managed to go in front on 12 minutes when Ryan Taylor fired in a shot from 25 yards out.

The ball was going harmlessly wide but it struck Rovers defender Dann to deflect past the helpless Paul Robinson, who could only watch as the ball found the back of net.

Rovers had numerous chances to level the scores with Anthony Modeste and David Hoillet both coming close for the home side.

However their best chance came on 43 minutes when Modeste was brought down in the box by Danny Simpson and referee Phil Dowd awarded the penalty.

David Dunn stepped up but his poor penalty was saved by Tim Krul, as was the rebound by the Dutch keeper to maintain Newcastle's lead going into the break.

In the second-half Rovers continued to create chances and once again it was Modeste who failed to find the back of the net with a couple of great opportunities.

Blackburn pushed for an equaliser and substitute Mauro Formica had a shot from close range but could only find the side netting on 81 minutes.

And Rovers were made to pay for their wastefulness as two minutes into injury Magpies substitute Obertan picked up the ball in his own half and ran through on goal to slot the ball past Robinson.

The final whistle was blown two minutes later and Rovers were left wondering of what might have been.
