Blackburn Rovers 2-0 Sunderland

Last Updated: Tue, 20 Mar 2012 21:57

Two second-half goals were enough to give Blackburn Rovers all three points against a lacklustre Sunderland at Ewood Park.

It was the home side who made the better start of the two teams and Yakubu nearly gave Rovers the lead when his effort beat Simon Mignolet, only for Phil Bardsley to clear the ball off the line after four minutes.

Rovers continued to press in the second-half and deservedly took the lead on 58 minutes when Morten Gamst Pedersen found David Hoilett, who fired the ball home with a fine volley.

Sunderland started to look brighter after the goal but never really tested Paul Robinson in the Rovers net.

Blackburn put the game to bed with just three minutes of regular time to go when Bradley Orr overlapped well to find Yakubu with a great cross and it was a simple finish for the Nigerian striker.

There was little time for the visitors to get a goal back and that's how it finished as Rovers go six points clear of the relegation zone.
