A Gretar Steinsson own-goal and a thumping finish from Mario Balotelli was enough for Manchester City to see off Bolton.
The home side created a host of chances in the opening minutes, the best of which saw Balotelli drive a shot against the post before Samir Nasri produced a fine reaction save from Adam Bogdan on the rebound after just two minutes.
With twenty-four minutes played Gael Clichy was allowed to drive forward to shoot from the edge of the box. The Frenchman's strike took a wicked deflection off Steinsson and nestled in the corner.
Ryo Miyaichi forced a fine save from Joe Hart eight minutes before the break as he capitalised on a slip from Kolo Toure to curl an effort towards the top corner, but Hart denied the youngster with a fine fingertip save.
Mario Balotelli squandered another good chance as he ran through one-on-one with Bogdan seconds after the restart. The Italian looked to side-foot it beyond the keeper but Bogdan made the save.
The second goal killed the game off with twenty-minutes to go. Adam Johnson made a jinking run to the byline before picking out Balotelli with the cut-back and he made no mistake as he smashed it home from close range.
The result sees City go five points clear of title rivals Manchester United, who travel to Spurs tomorrow, at the top of the Premier League while Bolton remain in the relegation zone.
