Manchester United go top of the Premier League after cruising to win over a West Bromwich Albion side who had Jonas Olsson sent off.

A goal in each half from Wayne Rooney was enough to see an often wasteful United ease past the Baggies at Old Trafford.

Keith Andrews went close in the early stages as he met Liam Ridgewell's low cross but the Irishman turned it wide of the front post after just six minutes.

United dominated the majority of the first half and went ahead on 35 minutes as Javier Hernandez's deflected shot fell for Wayne Rooney who turned home from close range.

A clumsy tackle from Jonas Olsson on Wayne Rooney saw the Swede booked on fifty minutes and the second yellow came fifteen minutes later. Hernandez was chopped down by the Swedish defender on halfway and was given his marching orders.

Danny Welbeck squandered a good chance immediately after but United went two ahead in the seventieth minute. Ashley Young was felled in the box by Gabriel Tamas and Rooney converted the spot kick emphatically.

David De Gea was impressive when called upon and made a fine save in the final stages as he got down to his left to parry Shane Long's low effort wide.

The victory sees United surpass Man City at the top of the table while Roy Hodgson's men slide to thirteenth but remain thirteen points clear of the drop zone.
