Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick as Liverpool recorded a comfortable win over relegation threatened Wigan at the DW Stadium.

Suarez became the Premier League's top goalscorer as he dazzled Roberto Martinez's side for the second time this season.

Liverpool beat Wigan 3-0 in the reverse fixture at Anfield thanks to an inspired second half performance - and two goals - from Suarez and the Uruguayan striker was in similar mood in Lancashire for the late Saturday kick-off.

Wigan entered the match in high hopes after ending their six-match winless streak at Reading last weekend but fell behind inside the opening two minutes when Philippe Coutinho picked out Stewart Downing who was left with a simple header from four yards out.

January signing Coutinho turned on the style again after 18 minutes as he slipped a neat reverse pass through for Suarez to open his account for the evening.

Suarez's second came with a stroke of fortune when his free-kick took a deflection off Shaun Maloney and beat the despairing dive of Ali Al-Habsi.

Wigan failed to cope with Suarez - a contender for Player of the Season - all night long and he completed his hat-trick four minutes into the second half with a shot that squeezed through the legs of Al-Habsi.

It wasn't always one-way traffic as Pepe Reina pulled off three excellent saves but the win moves Liverpool up to seventh in the Premier League, three points behind Merseyside rivals Everton. Wigan meanwhile now have the worst defence in the top flight but stay just above the relegation zone on goal difference.
