Wigan Athletic made it five games without a win as they were comprehensively beaten by a ruthless Sunderland side.

A clinical second half performance from Sunderland saw them run out comfortable winners over Wigan Athletic who remain in the bottom three. Three points for the rejuvenated Sunderland sees them move into the top half of the Premier League.

Wigan struck the woodwork twice in the opening period but fell behind in first half stoppage time as Craig Gardner found the net. Gardner struck an unstoppable free-kick from the edge of the box beyond the wall and into the top corner.

James McClean doubled Sunderland's lead on fifty-five minutes. David Vaughan crossed for McClean who finished from close range after his initial header was parried back out by keeper Ali Al-Habsi.

Hugo Rodallega reduced Wigan's deficit seven minutes later as his deflected shot nestled in the bottom corner after James McCarthy found him on the edge of the box.

Stephane Sessegnon put Sunderland out of sight on seventy-three minutes as he slotted home from Nicklas Bendtner's low cross having started the move.

Sunderland's fourth came with ten minutes remaining. McClean's shot was blocked into the path of David Vaughan who thumped the ball into the top corner from 20 yards.
