The home side continued to press and, for the first time this season looked solid in defence and dangerous in attack, with the returning Steven Pienaar causing constant problems on the left flank. Pienaar was well supported again by Baines on 35 minutes and the former Wigan full-back fizzed a delightful ball into the six-yard box where record signing Marouane Fellaini arrived to poke past Given for his first Everton goal.
The Toffees looked in total control and were cruising towards the interval with a two-goal lead until Steven Taylor appeared unmarked at the back post to divert Geremi's cross past a helpless Tim Howard just seconds before the end of first-half injury time.
Taylor's header completely changed the complexion of the game and Newcastle appeared for the second period revitalised.
England Under-21 international Taylor, normally a centre-back but being used at right-back, found himself on the byline and lifted his head to pick out Damien Duff unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box and the Irishman cooly slotted past Howard just 54 seconds after the restart.
The Magpies came closest to finding a winner as Baines made a heroic goal-line clearance to deny N'Zogbia from point blank range on 78 minutes. Interim Toon boss Joe Kinnear will surely be delighted the way his team fought back, but Everton are still yet to win at home this season.
