Standard Liege 2-1 Everton

Toffees crash out of UEFA Cup in Liege despite a spirited display from David Moyes' side.

It just wasn't to be Everton's night tonight as they were beaten by an impressive Standard Liege side.

The Merseysiders started with all the passion necessary to get a result in Belgium but just didn't make enough of their early chances, with Louis Saha failing to make the most of an early opportunity.

Liege hardly saw the ball in the opening stages and their opening goal came from their first attack, Tim Howard palmed away a good effort from Defour but the rebound came to Jovanovic who crossed the ball for Witsel to finish on 22 minutes.

After the opening goal Liege began to dominate but Everton got back into the game after some comical goalkeeping from Liege keeper Aragon who dropped the ball twice from a Tim Cahill corner before Phil Jagielka toe-poked the ball into the goal.

Everton pressed hard for the second goal they needed before Jovanovic broke into the penalty box and was brought down by Leighton Baines. A Penalty was awarded but Baines may feel aggrieved as he seemed to win the ball fairly. Jovanovic stepped up to take the spot-kick himself and calmly slotted the ball past Howard.

Everton pushed but couldn't find the equaliser and Victor Anichebe saw a shot deflected over the bar in the final minute of stoppage time.

Liege go through to the next round winning 4-3 on aggregate.
