Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Sunderland

Djibril Cisse grabbed a late debut goal to give Sunderland a 2-1 victory over Spurs at White Hart Lane who dominated for long periods.

Roy Keane raided Juande Ramos' side in the summer and, in a very disappointing first half, French midfielder Steed Malbranque came closest to breaking the deadlock as he struck the base of the post with a fierce effort from the edge of the penalty area.

The second half was a much livelier affair and Gareth Bale wasted a glorious chance as he headed over from just six yards. The Black Cats made the Welshman pay just before the hour mark as Kieran Richardson robbed Jermaine Jenas before rifling the ball into the far corner with a vicious left-footed shot that flew past Heurelho Gomes.

Ramos immediately threw on Tom Huddlestone and Giovani Dos Santos and the changes galvanised the home side as Jenas - given more licence to roam after Huddlestone's introduction - arrived on cue to slide home a 73rd minute equaliser after Luka Modric had twice been superbly denied by Craig Gordon.

However, Spurs continued to waste chances and the stage was left for Keane's latest recruit - former Liverpool striker Cisse - to steal the headlines. Darryl Murphy escaped down the left to cross for an unmarked Cisse to glance the ball past an onrushing Gomes and into the net with just seven minutes to go. The goal marked the second time Cisse has scored a debut goal in a victory over Spurs at White Hart Lane, having achieved the same feat in his first appearance for Liverpool in 2004.
