Middlesbrough secured their first points away from home this season with a late winner from Jeremie Aliadiere.Wigan's Amr Zaki tested the rookie shot stopper with three first half efforts, as the visitors hung on.
The Latics continued to push for a winner in the second half and Turnbull again denied Zaki, Palacios and Koumas.
But it was Middlesbrough who had the final say when, on 88 minutes, Aliadiere stroked home for a win that takes his side above Wigan and into tenth place in the Premier League table.
